The Savage has been manufactured continuously from 1986 to date. For some reason they were not imported into the USA during the early 90's.
In about 1990, Suzuki introduced the 5 speed gearbox.
I've got a 1993 5 speed Savage and use the 86-88 Clymer manual with no problems.
Apart from the gearbox, I don't know of any mechanical differences between the 1986 and the 2002 Savages.
